The BLT
Today’s post is on one of my favorite things about summer. The bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich, or the BLT. It’s just the perfect summer meal. Simple and delicious!
Making this BLT also marked the first time I have ever attempted cooking bacon. You’ll notice that the photos of this step are conspicuously absent. At first, this was because I was more worried about not burning myself than taking pictures. In the end, it was because I burnt the crap out of the bacon and filled my apartment full of smoke. In fact, the pieces of bacon that made it into the picture (plus enough for one more sandwich) ended up being the only pieces I ate. The rest made it into the garbage can. Since then, I’ve heard I should try cooking bacon in the microwave or in the oven, so I’ll have to try that. In the meantime, I’m happy with Oscar Meyer fully cooked bacon. Shh, don’t tell.
Everything you need for a BLT. Bread, tomato, lettuce, bacon, miracle whip, salt and pepper.
First, I sliced up my tomato. Then I fried my bacon, but we’ve already established that I won’t be showing you that step.
Then I toasted my bread.
Followed by a generous slathering of miracle whip. Seriously tomato, plus the “tangy zip of Miracle whip” is just wonderful.
Then I showed how completely weird and anal I am by cutting my tomato so I could put it in one single layer. Cause I’m strange like that and I don’t like it doubled up. I’m also a strange person who doesn’t like the meat too thick on my sandwiches either.
Salt and pepper the tomato. Usually I go all out and salt and pepper the other side of the bread too. Wild woman, I know.
Add your bacon, if it’s edible.
Then add your lettuce. Normally, lettuce picked out of a salad mix is not what I would use, but it’s what I had so that’s what you get.
Then put your sandwich together and eat! And use a napkin because it will drip yummy goodness everywhere!
The beautiful thing about summer, though? I’m just as happy with a simple tomato sandwich, where you’re done assembling after you salt and pepper your tomato. Which is exactly what I had with the rest of my tomatoes after I dumped my burnt bacon in the trash can and hauled it out to the dumpster while my apartment smelled like bacon for 3 days.

Get the precooked bacon. It is fast, easy, and tasty!
You can totally cook bacon. Just toss it in a skillet on medium heat until it’s all wrinkly, then carefully flip it over with a fork and cook it until it looks done. My biggest problem is that it’s never crunchy enough, but my husband likes it that way so it’s all good. He just throws the whole package in the skillet and stirs it until it’s the right color.
Baked and microwaved bacon is a crime against humaity. You must try again. Once you get over the fear of the popping grease (It really doesn’t hurt bad at all once you get over the fear) it’s easy.
Turn your heat down. When I first started cooking bacon I thought it had to have higher heat, but it doesn’t, it needs to be on medium heat. Then once it looks like it is getting done, if you want it to be crispier, drain the grease and put it back in the pan for a few minutes on each side.
I’m an over-baker-bacon-maker myself. Just put it on a baking sheet and bake it at 400 for like 20 min till it’s how you like it.
Also, I would TOTALLY cut the tomato to fit like you did AND I’m happy to know there’s someone else who likes their cold cut sandwiches “thin”. If I get a sandwich at the deli I pick off half the meat and make another sandwich with it later. They always put too much tuna on, too!
it’s the middle of the night, and looking at your photos makes me crave for a BLT right now. i don’t have the ingredients to make one though. *sigh* if only we could be satiated by goodie food pictures.
the nice part about a blt it is easy to make and is pretty much goof proof. I even will a slice or 2 of shaved ham to mine.
Yep, that’s right, you have to cook it between low and medium heat (this also reduces the shrinkage.) Take a fork and kind of poke it when in the pan(this keeps it from curling up too much.) Keep in mind that bacon cooks another minute or two after you remove it from the heat. So if you take it off still a little limp and just getting a nice light brown, when you let it sit on the plate for a minute or so, it will continue to cook.
Always empty the grease in the pan before placing another batch in to cook. If you don’t, it will smoke and you’ll end up with a lot of (often painful) splatter.
The most important rule…YOU CAN’T COOK BACON FROM ANOTHER ROOM…lol…you’d be surprised how many people try to do this. They put it on and then go in the living room to watch t.v. You have to stay with it and watch it.
Once you get the hang of it, it’s so easy you’ll be cooking bacon right and left. (and I agree with the other poster…baked and microwaved bacon just aren’t the same, nor is the pre-cooked kind)
Despite everything it looks great! BLT is my favourite sarnie, I’m salivating just looking at your pictures
