Peanut Butter and Pickle Sandwiches

I could pretend that I haven’t posted in a couple of weeks to give the Entrecard contest maximum exposure, but that just simply wouldn’t be true. The truth is, I just haven’t made anything worth talking about. I have the ingredients to make some cookies that I just have to get the motivation to get started on. I’m just not the kind of person who feels the need to make a brand new, never tried before dish every single time I cook. I find things that I like (and know how to make!) and make them time and time again. Generally that means I’ve already posted these dishes, and it just doesn’t make sense to post and say “Oh, I made Sausage Gravy and Biscuits, or I made Johnny Marzetti.

Today, however, I decided to share with you one of my more peculiar favorite sandwiches. The peanut butter and pickle sandwich. If you’re seriously grossed out by the thought of that, you can thank Ted Murphy from Izea because he’s the one who gave me the idea to post about them. Now, I’ve been eating peanut butter and pickle sandwiches since I was a kid, but Ted recently started a conversation about them when he started eating peanut butter and pickle wraps. It’s for that reason that when I was putting together my sandwich last night so I wouldn’t have to take meds on an empty stomach, I decided to snap a couple of pictures.

First you need two pieces of bread.

Bread

Then, you need your peanut butter. What kind you use is up to you. I tend to bake with creamy peanut butter, but I choose chunky peanut butter for sandwiches. My mom on the other hand uses creamy peanut butter for her PB & P sandwiches. So slather on some peanut butter of your choosing.

Chunky Peanut Butter

Finally, you need to add the pickles. If I’m just snacking on pickles, I prefer the high-quality Claussen variety. For a simple sandwich however, basic dill hamburger slices will do just fine! How many pickles you put on your sandwich is also up to you, but I choose to put a single layer of as many pickle slices I can fit on the piece of bread.

Then you just put your sandwich together, and enjoy! Mmm…. Now I’m wishing I’d brought another peanut butter and pickle sandwich to work with me for lunch, but I suppose I’ll just have to be satisfied with the turkey sandwich I have.

If you are a fellow PB & P lover, let’s hear from you! And if you try one after reading this, I would LOVE to hear your thoughts. The first time I saw my mom eating this sandwich, I said “Ewwwwwwwwww!” but she made me try and a bite and the rest is history!

yeah, I definitely have to reply with ewww LOL. But I don’t even like pickles on a hamburger, I don’t hate pickles, just only like them on certain things and at certain times. They are best in a sandwich with Hungarian Salami and onions, yummmy.
I like peanut butter and banana sandwiches though!

I like PB & pickles, but I haven’t had any for a while. I don’t usually keep pickles in the house. I ight have to buy some soon.

  3. Bethany James on March 31st, 2008

There is definately something very intriguing about that! I’ve always enjoyed a peanut butter and cheddar sandwich too. But only when I’m in a certain mood, I suppose.

  4. blueyes on March 31st, 2008

I can’t do PB and pickles. PB and fluff sure, PB and bananas bring it.

  5. Ted Murphy on March 31st, 2008

    OHHHHHHH YEAH!
Now that is what I am talkin’ bout!

  6. Anna on March 31st, 2008

I like peanut butter and pickles together, but I’ve never put them on a sandwich. I am going to have to try it soon. My grandma liked peanut butter and onion sandwiches. I’ve never tried those either.

    LOL I love this post.

  8. Cassie on April 1st, 2008

Ok, I love pickles… But that just sounds disgusting! I don’t even let my kids have pickles on the side of a peanut butter sandwich because it grosses me out.

  9. Angie Hurst on April 1st, 2008

    That just doesn’t seem right….

  10. Kelly on April 1st, 2008

I’ve been eating PB&P sandwiches since I was a kid, too. I like sweet pickles rather than the dills, though. Had one just the other day, in fact.

One of my other favorite “weird” sandwiches is an onion sandwich. Yellow mustard on both pieces of bread, slices of raw onion (Vadalias are my fav), a little salt and black pepper… YUM! (Don’t forget the breath mints, though. LOL)

Growing up, I thought it was normal to eat peanut butter and pickle sandwiches because my mom made them for us all the time.

After I got married, I offered to make one for my hubby and he thought that was the grossest thing he had ever heard of.

It is great to know that there are others out there that do eat pb&pickle sandwiches.

  12. Saph -Walk with Me on April 1st, 2008

This sounds just as bad as pickles and ice cream! =)
    Ewww! LOL

  13. Margaret on April 2nd, 2008

I L-O-V-E LOVE pb&p sandwiches. I grew up eating them and still love them to this day — they bring back happy memories.

We used sweet mixed (you know — the kind with not just cucumber pieces, but cauliflower and onions) — those were the bomb if a little lumpy.

My mouth is watering just thinking about it and wouldn’t you know it? I don’t have the ingredients for them here in the house! DARN!

  17. Ellen on April 2nd, 2008

I tried the peanut butter and pickle sandwich today – but only half sandwich. I really liked it!!!!I was surprised when I read your post about it but I thought…why not!!!So I will probably eat them now for awhile.

This combination doesn’t sit well with me. I can get PB and jelly or even bananas like jackie and blueyes. But not pickles. Always take them out of my burgers as well. lol.

  20. Platinum on April 4th, 2008

Hmmm I do believe I will have to try this since I never have before. BTW, I perused your blog and am going to add you to my reader – great job on the pictures, descriptions and letting some of the overly opinionated comments roll off your back! ,>

    Happy Friday!

  23. Drew on April 6th, 2008

I am rather nervous about trying this but at the same time I feel compelled to try a Peanut Butter and Pickle sandwich. I’m wondering how it would taste toasted or grilled. I’m thinking grilled would be delicious. For some reason I don’t think soft bread is gonna cut it for me. Grilled. I will have to try this.

    I love Claussen dill pickles!

  24. Ruthie on April 6th, 2008

I guess you have to really like pickles to make that sandwich work, huh? I have never been able to stomach them, so won’t be trying that one! LOL

  25. beeker on April 7th, 2008

So many people swear by this sandwich. I have never tried it. I am not a big fan of dill pickles. Would it work with sweet pickles?

  26. Chelle on April 14th, 2008

My cousin used to eat these, i always thought she was so weird…it is so funny to see someone else eats them too! the pictures are great! but you haven’t convinced me to eat one, lol :)

  27. Loretta on April 14th, 2008

Peanut Butter and Cheeeeeeeeeese is way better.

    or Cheese and Pickles….

  28. If you add a slice of bologna to the peanut butter and pickles sandwich, oh, and just a little mustard, you’ll have one of my husband’s favorite sandwiches! Yum!

  29. Caitlin @ C³ on April 23rd, 2008

I prefer peanut butter and mayonnaise myself! ;)

  30. Drew on April 26th, 2008

    Jenn,

Thanks for inspiring me. I went and made a Peanut Butter and Pickle Sandwich today for lunch and it was delicious. It is chronicled on my blog.

I’m confused; Your last picture is of two slices of bread next to eachother, but i dont think that makes a sandwich… I don’t know what to do now, where’s the next picture?

  33. Clint on February 4th, 2009

Years ago a girlfriend introduced me to peanut butter and pickles sandwiches. Since then I’ve tried it with other things picked…I am not making this up, peanut butter is also great with capers, picked ginger (Asian department of any grocers), and, yes, sauerkraut. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

One of my customer’s recommended a pb&p to me today so I had to try one. I made one, consumed it and thought, “I’ll stick to my pb&j”.

  35. Nicole on September 17th, 2009

My roommate in college first introduced me to this. My first reaction…”uh, are you pregnant?” Then I tried it, wanted to hate it…but mmm mmm good! I find myself craving them. SO SO GOOD!

  37. [...] The Peanut Butter and Pickle Sandwich. Sound weird? Disgusting, you say? If those were the first thoughts that jumped into your head, think about it again. This sandwich sounded so bizarre, that I thought it just had to be great!  I decided to give it a try.  I actually really enjoyed that sandwich. It ended up being quite tasty. [...]

  38. Michelle on January 29th, 2010

OMG soooooooooo good! Been eating them since I was little. Recently found out that they are also my boyfriends mom’s favorite sandwich!

  39. Teresa on September 1st, 2010

My dad and I used to have a PJ & P sandwich every Sunday night when I was a kid. We were the only ones in a family of 7 that liked them.

  40. Bobby on September 29th, 2010

OK, I admit I have some mental problems but eating PB&P sandwiches is not one of them. They are awesome and I pity the people who have not been introduced to them. I started making them around 5th grade (don’t ask me why) and I never told anyone I was eating them. Nobody among all my relatives eat them.
I never read or heard about them…so I consider myself an inventor! Fifty-five years later, I still love them and it still grosses out 97% of the people I tell my little secret to.

  41. Taylor on October 23rd, 2010

ohhh i just have a craving for penate butter and pickles on top my two favoriet foods mmmmmmmmm

  42. Scott on December 11th, 2010

This is my favorite sandwich. My girlfriend is repulsed by it but wont try it. But then she dont like onions or mushrooms so…Anyways,,,it is such a comfort thing for me,,, my mom made them for me when I was a wee lad. Now I am 40 and I still make them a couple times a week.

  43. Rebecca on January 24th, 2011

I will try this. Honestly sounds pretty nasty, but hey I’ll take a risk. The worse that could happen is puke(referring to others cause I won’t puke), or have a new great tasting snack!

  44. Mischelle on March 9th, 2011

I’m loving this sandwich.Pickel and Peanut butter with fresh slice of tomato was great!! And a warm cup of Green Tea, to sooth the taste. Yummmmmm

  45. Matthew Wallace on August 4th, 2011

I’m currently having a wisdom tooth come in, and it’s causing me some issues with what I can and cannot eat. I love peanut butter sandwiches. And I love pickles. But, a whole pickle is hard to bite into at the moment. Solution: This sandwich! Solved my craving for both!

  46. Greene Pickles on October 18th, 2011

i bet this would be even better if you mixed the peanut butter with a splash of soy sauce and a dash of cayenne pepper!

  48. Randy Lee on April 23rd, 2012

Back in the 1960′s, it was a treat to get a PB&P in my lunch bag.. My brothers and sisters all opted for Sweet Pickles, but I’ve always preferred Dill… Nowadays I make mine, starting with lightly toasted bread, maybe a touch of real butter, creamy peanut butter (easier to chew), and either the Dill Stackers (sliced longways), or, if we are out of those, a good quality pickle relish (made with sugar (no HFCS)).
Other than that, all I can say is, YUMMM :)
